What is an NDA?
NDA or National Defence Academy is the combined service academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets from the three services, the Army, Navy and Air Force, train together before they join their respective service academies. Before they go on pre-commission training. NDA is located at Khadakwasla near Pune, Maharashtra.
The NDA exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the candidate who clears the SSB (Services Selection Board) interview.

NDA is the world’s first tri-services academy. The National Defence Academy (NDA) has so far produced 27 service chiefs, including 3 Param Vir Chakra and 9 Ashok Chakra recipients.
What is the qualification for NDA exam:
NDA 2022 is conducted for all India candidates, candidates who wish to join the Indian Defense Forces. Those candidates are recruited through NDA, in the Air Force, Navy and Army. Before applying, ensure your eligibility because only those candidates who fulfil what qualification or eligibility condition to go into NDA will be eligible to appear in the online test.
Nationality:
- The applying candidate must be a citizen of India, Nepal or Bhutan.
- A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 01 January 1962 with the intention of becoming a permanent resident of India is also eligible.
- A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Burma, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and East African countries such as Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India may also apply.
Age Limit:
(1) 2022: Candidates having age between 2nd July 2001 to 1st July 2004 are eligible for the exam. If born before 2nd July 2001 and after 1st July 2004 are not eligible for NDA (1) 2022 exam.
(2) 2022: Whose age is between 2nd January 2002 to 1st January 2005. They are allowed to take the test if the candidate is of age before 2nd January 2002 and after 1st January 2005. So they are not allowed to sit in the exam.
Only unmarried male candidates are eligible for the NDA exam. Girls are not allowed to appear in the NDA entrance exam.
Educational Qualification:
The minimum qualifications required for the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force are as follows:
Eligibility for Indian Army:- Candidates who want to apply for Indian Army, they must have passed 12th (10+2 pattern) or its equivalent examination from a recognized board. The candidates who are going in the 12th examination can also apply for this.
Eligibility for Indian Navy and Air Force:- Candidates going to Indian Navy and Air Force must have passed 12th / (10+2 pattern) from a recognized Board or University with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
Physical Efficiency
It is mandatory for the candidates to be physically and mentally fit as per the physical standards framed by the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination 2022.
A candidate who has resigned or withdrawn on disciplinary grounds from any of the Armed Forces Training Academies is not eligible to apply.
How to join NDA –
To join NDA, you have to follow these steps given below –
1. Apply for UPSC NDA Exam.
To join the National Defense Academy (NDA), a candidate has to appear in an entrance exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), which takes place twice a year, usually in the months of March and August. Candidate must be an unmarried male.
2. Clear UPSC NDA Exam.
After applying for the NDA exam you have to crack the NDA exam (Prelims & Mains) to be conducted by “Union Public Service Commission”.
3. Clear the SSB interview.
To join NDA, SSB (Services Selection Board) interview, medical and after that merit list is issued, on the basis of which it is decided whether you can join NDA or not. After successful in the NDA exam, there are many tests like the NDA Physical Fitness Test, Group Discussion etc. which are required to be cleared.
4. Complete the training.
After clearing all the tests, you are sent for training according to the post i.e. the post for which you applied, when your training is completed, after that you can join that post of NDA. can do.
Height for NDA
- The minimum height measurement for the Air Force is 157 cm (162.5 cm).
- For Gorkhas and persons belonging to the hills of North-Eastern regions of India, Garhwal, and Kumaon, the minimum height shall be at least 5 cm.
- The minimum height can be reduced by 2 cm in case of candidates from Lakshadweep.
The detailed height/weight parameters are mentioned below:
- The weight should be between 42.5 Kg to 66.5 Kg for Army and Air Force candidates with a height of 152-183 cms, while for NAVY candidates with a height of 152-183 cms, the weight should be between 44 Kg to 67 Kg. must be between
- The applicant has to cover a distance of 2.4 km in 15 minutes and they also have to do 20 sit-ups.
NDA Exam Pattern:
National Defence Academy i.e. NDA 2022 Exam is conducted twice in a year through offline mode (written exam). There are 2 sections in the exam- Mathematics and General Ability Test. The total duration of NDA is 5 hours for both the sections combined.
- All the questions in the exam will be of objective type i.e. Multiple Choice Questions will be asked.
- The medium of examination will be bilingual with a total of 900 marks.
- Out of 270 questions, 120 questions will be asked from Mathematics and 150 questions from the General Ability section.
- There is a provision of negative marking for each wrong answer as per the marks allotted for the questions asked in the examination.
The syllabus (syllabus) covered under NDA will be of 10+2 level.
