Understanding Uterine Fibroids
For effective fibroids treatment Singapore offers advanced medical facilities with specialized options. Unfortunately, the exact cause of the fibroids is not known. During the reproductive years, the fibroids are stimulated by the hormones estrogen and progesterone. During the growth of the fibroids, they disturb the function of the uterine lining and thereby prevent the normal function of the blood vessels in the uterine muscle. They may also compress the lymphatic vessels in the uterine lining, leading to swelling. It is certainly a feeling of pressure and weight and possibly backache. You may also have pain during sexual intercourse. As many as 50% of women develop fibroids. However, only about one-third of these fibroids are large enough to be detected by a caregiver during pregnancy. Fibroids are most common in women in their early 30s and 40s.
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus. They are soft and will increase in size in response to the estrogen produced by the ovaries. They often develop during the best childbearing years. The fibroids are of varied shapes, sizes, and locations. These are the submucosal, intramural, and subserosal fibroids. Submucosal fibroids grow towards the inner cavity of the womb and deform it, often causing heavy and prolonged periods and sometimes bleeding in between the menstrual cycle. Intramural fibroids are located within the muscular wall of the uterus. They are most commonly found among affected women. They may be present frequently and, in such cases, increase the size of the uterus with time. Subserosal fibroids grow towards the outer cavity of the uterus and frequently cause pressure symptoms.
Traditional and Conventional Treatment Methods
If you’re considering UFE Singapore has many experienced professionals to guide you through the procedure. The most common conditions treated are stroke, bleeding, clotting, and cancers. Stroke can be treated by carotid artery occlusion, or clotting or bleeding in the brain can be treated by aneurysm coil embolization if the aneurysm is found before it ruptures. Clotting and many bleeding conditions can be treated by embolization. Accompanying cancers can be embolized either before or after their surgical removal. Other conditions treated – aneurysms, blockages/blood clots (DVT), and other such conditions, varicose veins, and more can receive these interventions. All these conditions are usually serious enough to require treatment of some kind.
There are many ways to stop a bleeding artery in an emergency – for example ligation (tying off the artery), occlusion (blocking the artery), embolization (blocking the artery with a clot), and others. When these are performed using an imaging technique (such as x-rays) to guide the physician, then it is called vascular interventional radiology. These minimally invasive alternatives to surgery are much easier on the patient, in both risk and recovery time, than open surgery, which normally requires a general anesthetic and long recovery in the hospital. Most vascular problems are now treated this way. The patient is also very often able to resume normal activities much more quickly and at much lower risk.
Minimally Invasive Treatments at Vascular and Interventional Centre
An angiogram is the process of using a contrast material to visualize blood vessels. For this procedure, only the affected limb or part of the body needs to be exposed. An angioplasty is used to reopen blocked arteries. Once an artery has been compressed or blocked, a thin catheter tube is inserted into the leg and into the small balloon at the site of the blockage. Once in place, the balloon is inflated, opening up the vein. There is another procedure where a small stent may be placed within the artery to keep the vessel open. Patients are normally given a mild sedative for these processes, and they are also used to lying flat. Vascular and Interventional Center staff will keep an eye on the patient for a few hours after completing the procedure and help get them back safely from the facility of the day.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE)
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive treatment for fibroids, non-cancerous growths that develop inside the womb of a woman. The procedure is performed to block the blood supply that is feeding the fibroids, causing the fibroid to shrink. UFE is a day procedure whereby the patient is awake throughout the procedure under conscious sedation. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and through a small incision (5mm) on your thigh or arm, a microcatheter is inserted into the uterine artery under x-ray control. Embolic agents are then introduced into the uterine artery to block the blood supply that is feeding the fibroids. The embolic agents used are particles and/or gelatin sponge. The procedure may take up to one hour. The patient will be monitored for a couple of hours after the UFE. Most patients are discharged the same day after the procedure. For those in need of benign tumor treatment Singapore provides top-tier medical care and innovative treatments.
